It is officially that time of year again – twinkly lights are shining from every store, home and tree. There’s a sense of hope and magic in the air. Christmas is the hot topic on everyone’s lips – from what their plans are, to what gifts they’re planning to buy or what they’re wearing to all the end of year parties.
Like every other woman, my style sensibilities tend to gravitate towards sequins and red lips at this time of year, but since red lipstick to the office has been conisdered a fashion faux pas for generations, I thought I’d hit up the people who understand the classic, sophisticated beauty space the best for some tips on how to wear it and whether the concept has evolved in recent years.
When I walked through the doors and to the Chanel counter at Harvey Nichols, I was greeted by my makeup artist for the day, who handed me a glass of Prosecco and assured me that red lips, were infact, 100% doable to the office.
The tricks, she said, waere to (1) Pick the right shade of red that looks polished and put-together. This would avoid steering clear of anything too dark and vampy, anything too orange tgat looked summery or a traditional pillar box red that was more Hollywood Glam. She steered me in the direction of a beautiful brick red that (Rouge La Vie – no. 58) was a bit more diffused than a traditional red and has quickly gone on to become a liptstick I can’t live without in my beauty arsenal.
(2) Don’t go over the top with the rest of your makeup. Keep it simple. Steer clear of pearing it with a smokey eye or anything sparkly.
So my rule of thumb quikcly became “What would Kiera Knightley do in a Chanel advert?” and then mimmicking precisely that.
She first prepped my skin with their Hydra Beauty Gel Creme and primed with the famous Le Blanc de Chanel illuminating primer, both products being part of their signature year-round beauty and skincare offers.
She then created the perfect blank canvas for their gorgeous makeup by using the Perfect Lumière Velvet foundation, which I have to say, I was very surprised by. I usually tend to steer clear of foundations with the word ‘velvet’ in it, as the popular belief is that they can be fairly heavy. This one, however, not only felt and looked really light on my face, but stayed matte for hours and hours after! This is definitely a product I will be going back for again and again.
.After this, she set to work creating the perfect copper smokey eye using their Les 4 Ombres Quadra Eyeshadow in ‘Candeur et Expérience’ and the Illusion d’Ombre cream eye shadow in ‘Rouge Brûlé’ which are the signature eyeshadows for the new Le Rouge A/W collection. She went subtle with the eyeliner along my upper lashline (a refreshing change from the wing!) drawing a soft black line with the Écriture de Chanel eyeliner, finishing off with a coat of the Le Volume de Chanel mascara on my upper and lower lashes.

She then filled in my brows to give them a classy, full but natural look (no dreaded ‘Instagram brow’ here!) using the Crayon Sourcils eyebrow pencil, added a little warmth to my complexion using the Soleil Tan de Chanel bronzer and then made my cheeks pop with the Rouge Profond blusher. I love how the blush is a sultry red/pink/brick combination – perfect for the cooler months when you feel like straying from super bronzed summer skin.
To finish the look off, I was allowed me to pick the pièce de résistance and my favourite part of any beauty look- my lipstick. I opted for the Rouge Allure Velvet in ‘Rouge Vie’ (no.58) from the Le Rouge collection – a beautiful diffused brick red that looked a little bit like what your red lipstick would look like under the soft glow of warm candlelight. She lined my lips with the closest matching lip liner (no 98, also from Le Rouge) and did a beautiful, precise job of making my lips look elegantly fuller.
.As I thanked her and left with a little Chanel shopping bag with the Rouge Vie lipstick I bought in it, I had a feeling I’ll be going back for the stunning burgundy brown pictured below as soon as cooler temps hit. And the foundation. And the blusher. And a nail polish!
