I remember walking into work every morning and seeing a colleague sitting at her desk responding to emails, casually sipping on what looked…well, far too green and healthy for my liking. First of all – how did she always manage to get in before me? Secondly, what on EARTH is that thing she’s drinking? I was more of a slap a slice of ham and cheese on some bread and walk out the door kinda gal, but each to their own, I suppose.
Except that lately, my energy levels haven’t been great and my skin has been breaking out like crazy. I haven’t wanted to admit it, but I know it probably has a lot to do with what I’m eating or rather, not eating. Don’t get me wrong – I won’t be abandoning my old friends meat, bread and potatoes anytime soon and the idea of having to eat a salad at lunch, just to be able to pack some fruit and veg into my diet, seemed possibly unbearable. No, I’m not being dramatic.
So I thought the easiest way to pack more fruit and veg into my diet, without having to acually go through with eating it, was to drink it all in one big glug in the morning, and then not have to worry about it for the rest of the day. This is how I roll. I looked into the idea of smoothies at the start of December, but the whole thing seemed so cumbersome – cutting, peeling, proportions and protein powders just sounded like so much hard work. I also may have temporarily abandoned ship on the idea entirely when I found out how much a Nutribullet actually costs. But when Amazon was having a sale on blender this January, I bit the bullet and finally got one – vowing to make the experience as easy and painless possible for myself. And you know what? I am SO glad I did! This little routine has gone on to become one of my favoutite parts of my day, because its easy AF and I’m all about that life. Here’s a few of the questions I had and the hurdles I was afraid to cross before I took the plunge, so you can get your smoothie on without all the feeling round in the dark that I had to do:
You don’t need an expensive blender
All the cool, healthy yoga girls on Instagram have Nutribullets, but for someone who wasn’t sure whether this was a habit she would enjoy or continue, I wasn’t willing to put down a lot of money for one. Luckily, since everything is on sale this January, I managed to find one by Breville called the Blend Active reduced to £20 on the ASDA website. Even better, the Amazon Treasure Truck had a special one-day deal on them, and I managed to score mine for £10! This isn’t by any means an ad for Breville or anything, but I honestly don’t know why I was even considering a more expensive option – this works like a dream and even crushes ice, so I’m sorted for margheritas in the summertime woop woop! Did I mention these little Breville bad boys also come in PINK? Again, not an ad. Just an excited customer.
You don’t need to waste time cutting or peeling your fruit and veg
Ugh I’d rather spend ten extra minutes scrolling through my Twitter feed or perfecting my winged liner than cutting and peeling messy fruit, wouldn’t you? I just know it’d get all over my clothes, too! No thanks! Instead, I go to Tesco and buy ready-cut and peeled fruit cups. They cost £2.50 a cup and one cup lasts you for a good 2-3 smoothies. So 2-3 cups would do you for the whole week. However, if you’re not a fan of pre-cut anything *ahem* and like to slice and dice on your own, then I’d recommend buying re-sealable freezer bags. Cut up 5-6 different fruits and combine them in different ways in the freezer bags so they’re ready for you to pop in the blender and go in the morning. When you freeze fruit, it is likely to stay fresh for a good three months, but personally, I’d make a practice of doing all my cutting and chopping once a week.
You don’t need recipes or proportions
I’m not going to lie, I’m the annoying girl that posted in the group chat far too many times asking for smoothie recipes, and I now know why nobody bothered replying (thanks guys). It was because I didn’t need one to begin with! Sure, you can find and experiment with loads of recipes on Pinterest. But I find it easier to just chuck a quarter of an assorted fruit cup in there, a handful of spinach, one banana and some water – et voila! Smoothie on point. No perfectly measured proportions, no recipes, no stress.
You don’t need to spend money on protein powders
I mean, you totally can if you want to. It depends on what results you want out of your smoothie, I suppose. But I worried that since so many people added protein powders to their smoothies, that I had to, too, for some reason. And that this would work out rather expensive. Well, you don’t! If you’re just doing it to pack more fruit and veg into your diet like me, you can totally avoid this addition.
You don’t need to add milk or yoghurt
When I was browsing Pinterest looking for smoothie recipes (because nobody replied in the group chat), it was rare to actually come across a recipe that didn’t have milk, almond milk or yoghurt in it. I couldn’t work out exactly why people added yoghurt (except that maybe its good for digestion?) but flavour-wise, you’re not missing much without it. Similarly with milk, I just avoid it in my smoothies and use water or coconut water instead – it works to make the smoothie runnier, and that’s really all you need it to do. Again, feel free to add in dairy if you want to. Just remember that diary isn’t always the best for your skin and often causes breakouts. Also, it definitely adds calories on when you could really avoid them altogether and save them for a cake later. Just me? Ok then!
You don’t need to add sugar or honey
So I’m not happy about it, but I always, always get judged for the 3-4 sweeteners I take in my tea or coffee whenever I decide to drink it (maybe once or twice a week). I can’t help it – I like my beverages like I like my men and my cakes – suh-weet! I genuinely thought I’d have to add sweeteners or honey to make my smoothie bearable, but I decided to try it without first and I’m so glad I did. You see, the reason I add a medium sized banana to my smoothies is because banana has such a distinct, sweet flavour, it always comes through in everything you add it to. This was not an exception. So not only am I not consuming as many sweeteners as I used to, but the sweetness from these fruits helps to regulate my blood sugar levels throughout the day, so I’ve been having less sugar cravings when the 3pm slump hits. Great, right?
You don’t even need to wash up after
Cue lazy girls high-fiving everywhere. The sippy glass that you actually blend the smoothie in twists off the blender and goes straight in the dishwasher when you’re done. Even the lid and the removable base with the blades are 100% dishwasher safe, so no need to worry your pretty little head about washing dirty utensils after. Uh-uh, honey. Not us.
Oh, and in case you’re wondering, this is exactly what I put in my smoothies everyday:
1/4 cup pre-cut and peeled assorted fruit
A random handful of spinach
Fill in the gaps by pouring water or coconut water till the sippy glass is half full (although coconut water adds absolutely nothing flavour wise – won’t be wasting money on that again!) Add more liquid later if you like it runnier.
Blend until smooth and walk around feeling like a total fox – okay you can stop that now you’re going to be late for work hun.
