Sweet Dreams Are Made Of Tweed

Let’s play a word association game, shall we? What is the first word that pops into your head when I say ‘tweed jacket’? For me, its ‘Chanel’, followed by ‘grandma’ and ‘pearls’. The humble tweed jacket has an undeniable reputation for being associated with wealthy old ladies, mostly from New York, who end up accessorizing them with dated pearl brooches and necklaces.

However, one little Google search and you’ll see that this is far from the case. Street style stars world over are pairing this timeless classic with ripped jeans, pleather, even trainers. Why? Because they’re smart, that’s why. Like successful stockbrokers, fashion power players know exactly where to invest their own money. They splurge on the classics and then bring them to life with fun, modern pieces that don’t break the bank and are on trend now, but likely to go out of style a few months from now.

You can never go wrong with a classic, and like Chanel handbags, who we’re told are almost as solid investments as houses these days (I didn’t say it – this article did), a classic Chanel tweed jacket comes in a close second.

However, for most of us who want the same look on a shoestring budget (nobody I know can afford Chanel, no matter how much of an investment it is!) there’s always the good ol’ high street. And the best part about the high street is that you can experiment with a similar style on the cheap to see how it fits in with your style and lifestyle, and when you’re good and sure its something you see yourself wearing regularly, you could splurge on a vintage piece or even the real deal when you’re good and ready.

I’ve always wanted a tweed jacket of my very own, but worried they were a little too preppy for me. But when this one caught my eye in all its oversized, distressed, deconstructed glory, I just couldn’t resist. Championing all my favourite autumn colours – navy, khaki, grey, black and cream, its super easy to throw on with most of my wardrobe this season, whether its jeans and ankle boots for walking the dogs or an A-line skirt and thigh highs for a glam evening out. Heck, it  even goes with my leggings and fluffy slippers when I’m lounging round on the weekend, since its so soft and cozy.

But my favourite of all items to pair it with has to be this gorgeous little khaki number by Tobi. Confession: I wore this dreamy dress and jacket combo with flats, tights and an oversized bag to run errands in that day, then slipped on my trusty OTK boots and a chic little box clutch for a dinner date with the hubster in the NQ later that night.

Versatile? I think so, but I’d love to hear your thoughts, so share them with me in the comments below! See you at the next post! xx
