Taking A Kimono From The Beach To The Street

If you’ve read the last couple of posts, you’ll know that my trip to Turkey fell through at the last minute, after I booked my tickets and bought practically a whole new holiday wardrobe I couldn’t even afford to begin with for it. And while shopping for my holiday was fun, I now have a bunch of super-summery swimsuits, shorts, playsuits, kimonos and dresses and no holiday in sight until September to wear them.

Luckily, I adopted a new strategy when it came to holiday shopping this time round, and that was that as far as possible, save for items like swimsuits and shorts, I’d buy pieces that I could easily assimilate into my everyday wardrobe with a little mix and match.

One of my favourite pieces from my holiday haul is this glorious Zara Kimono. Heavily Gucci-inspired, it immediately brought to mind that epic photo of Chrissy Tiegan casually cooking in her kitchen wearing a Gucci kimono like it was NBD. Which is probably why, when I had to style it myself, it only felt right to wear it with Gucci-inspired metallic loafers.

Now I’ve been around the block and seen many a kimono in my day, but what I love about this one is how perfect it is for a globetrottin gal. Can’t you just picture it now? Flowing freely in the breeze against the perfect backdrops of pretty much anywhere from Greece to Italy to Spain, Cuba, Turkey, Morocco, Japan, Egypt, China, Abu Dhabi and India. That’s probably why it is such a favourite among bloggers worldwide (more styling ideas here) and is sold out in stores everywhere.

The original plan was to wear it over a black or red swimsuit with a giganic gold beach bag and white sliders. However, since I’m not one of the contestants on Love Island, I’ve had to re-think the kimono to go with some of my everyday street cothes so I don’t need to wait till September for it to have its moment in the sun.

Enter my trusty mom jeans and my Gucci-esque granny shoes (named apty so as I always get complimets off somebody over the age of 65 when I wear them). Paired down with a simple white tank and accessorized to perfection with the season’s hottest trend, the straw bag, I’m able to slip out for a daytime date with bae with little to no fuss at all.

On warmer days or a dinner-and-drinks date,  I plan on switching the jeans out for a little denim skirt and maybe swapping the loafters for gold heeled sandals for a look that’s less ‘I woke up like this’ and more ‘b*tch better have my money’.

On a slightly different note, I’d like a moment to welcome the lovely and talented Alex to Mascara Every Saturday – he took all of these fab photos and I look forward to creating more beautiful, exciting content with him often. Check out his wicked Instagram page here.
