My Face But Better By Benefit

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Let’s face it, every girl’s got a go-to makeup look that she’s perfected to a T. In fact, she wears it so often it almost feels like an extension of her face. It goes with everything, is perfect for work, errand-running and every daytime event in her social calendar. It only take five minutes, makes her look fresh and awake, highlights her best features and conceals her flaws.

.

Mine varies slightly from season to season, but its a pretty safe bet to say that a lightweight foundation, pink blush on the apples of my cheeks, groomed brows, a flick of winged liner and a lick of lipstick that matches my natural lip colour is my makeup equivalent of a little black jacket.

.

Since I’d been in a rut of using the same products for a few months, thus receiving the same results from them every time, it was safe to say that I was a little too at home in my comfort zone. So, as part of Harvey Nichols’ Beauty and Bubbles campaign, the lovely Hannah from Benefit showed me how to elevate my everyday look with a few of their signature products. Here’s how it went down:

.

You’d have to be living under a rock to not know that Benefit is all about brows, brows, brows! Which is why that’s exactly where she started. She filled in my brows using Benefit’s Ka-Brow cream gel colour in no. 4 from their new line of brow products to sculpt and define my brows.

.

She then used the Gimme Brow volumizing fibre gel in no. 3 and I swear – my brows looked about three times their size after! I felt like Cara Delevigne and which girl doesn’t love that, amIright?

I liked this so much more than my usual method of using a brow pencil to fill in the gaps because even though it took about the same amount of time, it made my brows look thicker, neater and framed my whole face.

.

She then set to work on my face, by using Benefit’s famous Porefessional primer to half my face. I’d always heard about how good primers were, but I was absolutely blown away by this one. The two halves of my face looked completely different!

.

The primer made every line, pore and imperfection on my face look blurred, as if somebody had airbrushed it on Photoshop! I fell so in love with the results, I couldn’t leave without buying a tube to add to my makeup bag as no beauty routine is complete without it!

.

To add some subtle definition to my eyes, she decided to give me a nude smokey eye. Barely there and perfect for the daytime, she used the World Famous Neutrals Easiest Nudes Ever kit in ‘Call My Bluff’ all over my lid with a fluffy blending brush and then added a subtle definition to my crease using the Hoola bronzer.

.

I’d never thought to use bronzer to accentuate my crease before, but as it turns out, it really is the perfect product for the job. I will definitely be using this little tip in my daily routine going forward.

I love adding a little eyeliner along my upper lashline because I believe that the dark lines of a bold brow and dark eyeliner draw a person’s eye up and away from dark under eye circles. It’s all about visual trickery, isn’t it?

.

Hannah indulged my weird little theory by drawing a neat line along my upper lashline using Benefit’s They’re Real Lash-Hugging Gel Liner Pen, extending it outwards till it formed the post perfect wing I can sadly never replicate, despite my best efforts.

.

However, using a liner pen with an angled felt tip nib like this one as opposed to a brush you dip into liquid liner will give you pretty accurate results when trying achieve your dream wing.

She then coated my fine, barely-there lashes with their ‘They’re Real’ Tinted Lash Primer to boost volume and lengthen for a feathery look, which she topped off with the They’re Real mascara in black. Mascara is a step I sometimes tend to skip in my daily routine because I often forget I’m wearing it and rub my eye leaving me with a big smudge or if I get emotional watching a soap, it leaves me with a serious case of panda eyes. Luckily, this bad boy is smudge-proof, clump-proof and doesn’t dry out leaving you with stiff-feeling lashes in the middle of the day. Win!

Moving on to foundation, she used the light and bright Hello Flawless Oxygen Wow foundation in ‘beige’ which, even thought it had spf and was the perfect match to my skin tone (which I never find at the first try at any brand), it wasn’t as watery-light as my everyday foundation, so I’d probably dilute it with a drop or two of oil to achieve a similar formulation and finish.

.

She dusted my oily T-zone with a little Hello Flawless Custom Powder Cover Up to save me from getting shiny by the middle of the day. I still had to touch up with an oil absorption sheet and a little pressed powder in a couple of hours, but it left me a lot more matte than my regular foundation and powder tend to.

She then attacked my problem area (my dark under eye circles) with two of their world renowned concealers – Boing and Erase Paste, having the bags and darkness vanish off my face almost as if by magic.

.

Concealer is another step I am lazy with in my daily routine. I usually pick a foundation that is thick in coverage enough to hide my under eye area. However, sometimes the effect can be a little bit grey. Using a concealer specifically designed to target problem areas leaves you with a much more effective result with no grey peeking through from underneath.

She added some much-needed warmth to my sallow skin by dusting the same Hoola bronzer she used on my eyelid creases into the hollows of my cheeks for a subtle contour, on my temples and down the sides of my nose for a sun-kissed glow.

.

She then dabbed a smidgen of the Rockateur Famously Provocative Cheek Powder – a stunning rose gold hue I can’t wait to go back for – onto the apples of my cheeks for a pop of colour. I always tend to lean towards poppy pinks on the apples of my cheeks, but this pinky-golden-bronze felt a lot sexier, especially for summer.

.

No perfect canvas is complete without a highlight so bright your admirers will need shades. She gave my cheeks a lit-from-within glow reminiscent of a cheeky encounter with their Watt’s Up cream-to-powder highlighter. This is a step I usually look to only for a night out because I worry that highlighters can look a bit much in the daytime. Luckily, this nifty little number gave my skin a subtle, delicate champagne sheen that was perfect for the daytime.

Enfin, she finished with a ‘my lips but better’ shade of lipstick, aptly named ‘Nice and Teasy‘ since it was the perfect combination of naughty and nice, leaving much to the imagination of your bae.

Ha! I’m one of the people that must live under a rock! (well, I do like climbing them at least)

As someone who doesn’t wear make-up at all I find it really interesting to find out about all the things you can buy and how they are used. Thanks for the insight into the world of Benefit and make-up 🙂
