Game-Changing Makeup Hacks for Autumn / Winter

Game-Changing Makeup Hacks for Autumn / Winter

Every year, as summer starts to melt away like a half eaten popsicle and is replaced by a nip in the air and pumpkin spiced lattes, girls all over the world go on a beauty binge. And while moisturizers and berry lipsticks are always the new season staples, this year, why not up the ante with new formulations, textures and colours? Here are a few of the new-season makeup hacks to help you press the ‘refresh’ button on your beauty routine and some of the genius products that’ll help you find your way. (Scroll to the bottom of the page for a complete breakdown of this beauty look with the exact products used).

While I normally swear by a super light weight, light touch, barely-there foundation in the summetime, in the cooler months it just doesn’t seem like enough, especially with faces getting pinker and needing more coverage. I’ve switched to a creamy, moisturizing formulation with great coverage instead. I’m obsessed with the stunning airbrushed, editorial-like finish it provides, how it just glides over pores and imperfections and stays put for hours without needing a touch-up!

Corrector and Concealer

Confession – on most warm weather days, I can’t be bothered to do much else than use just another layer of foundation on my under eyes as a concealer. However, with fall makeup being more dramatic, I prefer to have a flawless base as a canvas for more dramatic eye and lip looks. I’ve been using the combination of a corrector and a concealer to deal with my pesky under eye area. The corrector has a yellow / orange colour which combats the bluey grey undertones under my eyes and the concealer covers it all up so I look fresh-faced and wide awake!

 Blusher and Highligter

Skin tends to look sallow in the cooler months as you tend to lose your rosy summer glow. Bring them back to life with a cream blusher on the apples of your cheeks for a dewy, rosy look and a touch of highligter on your cheekbones for a glow that catches the light as you move. Steer clear of powder blushers at this time of the year unless you have really oily skin, as they can look cakey and lack-lustre.

Like I mentioned before, eye makeup tends to get more dramatic this time of year, especially with all the year-end parties around the corner. In fact, I’ve been playing down my accessories and letting my smoky eyes and jewel tone lips do the talking lately. To make sure my eye makeup is nice and deep so it steals the show, Ive switched from powder shadows to cream shadows that come in the form of little crayons or sticks. The best part about them is not only are they very pigmented, but they’re also multipurpose, meaning you can slip them into your bag to use as eyeliner! (PS another handy hack for eyeshadow – if you’re uncompromising on using powder shadow, dip your brush in a bit of water before you swirl it around your shadow palette. Wet brushes make the colour go on rich and deep!)

Brow Filler

Fall / Winter beauty is all about bold brows. And while we can’t all have a gorgeous set of caterpillars like Cara Delevigne’s, filling them in with brow powder for a more defined look will do wanders to frame your face. Its super simple, too. Just take a cotton bud and hold either end under water for a few seconds each. You want it to be wet, but not dripping. Then dip it in very dark brown eyeshadow (almost black, but never, ever use black – way too harsh!) and fill in your brows with it. Remember not to pick a shiny / pearlescent shadow from a kit you already own. You want to brows to look as naturally full as possible, for which matte is the way to go. Any of these MAC shadows will do the trick.

Eyeliner and Mascara

I like to skip eyeliner altogether in the summer months and just do a pop of brown mascara with a light base and bright lips. In the cooler months, however, I’m all about a bold, flirty winged eye and full lashes. To get my winged liner perfect, I pull my eye taut from the outer corner, making sure the skin doesn’t pucker and I can draw a nice, smooth line.

I love a statement lip, which is why this time of year is my favourite beauty-wise. Lips get bolder, punchier, deeper, fuller and more sensual in Autumn / Winter. You can’t go wrong with an alluring wine or berry hue, and while I plan to do a post on my favourite lipsticks of the season, my number one obsession at the moment is Bobbi Brown’s Creamy Matte Lip Colour in Soft Plum. It is very matte and I like a bit of a sheen and some moisture, so I layer with a little tinted lip balm to smooth things along.

Nail varnish

While I love the greige, navy and olive nailpolish trends this season, you can’t go wrong with good old girly burgundy. Here’s a quick tip – if you love gel polish as much as I do, ask your manicurist to match her gel polish to a shade you love, so when it starts to grow out after 2-3 weeks and there is a gap between your cuticle and the gel polish, you can touch it up with your own polish and nobody will ever know!

And last but not least, a knockout fragrance which tells the world you’re sexy, strong and confident without having to actually say a word. I switch up my lighter fragrances for a bolder one each Fall, and am currently head over heels in love with Estée Lauder’s Modern Muse Le Rouge. I always get heaps of compliments when I wear it plus the bottle is so pretty, it would make the perfect Christmas gift for a friend, too! Tip: Dab a little Vaseline on to your wrists before you spritz on your fragrance to make it last through the day!

I too swear by a strong brow game these days! My dark circles just get darker with kohl application, so I have been using a brow pencil for a quick 5 min makeup. 🙂
