Contrary to what society dictates, I’ve always prided myself in not being a size small. For me, laughing yourself to a six-pack is the best workout and enjoying the many culinary delights life has to offer is probably one of my favourite indulgences after fashion. Sadly, the two don’t go hand in hand very often, and the crop top trend is a prime example of what I mean.
You know how it goes. You don’t exactly feel great about putting your midriff out there for the world and it’s brother to see after you’ve just eaten a pizza. And starving yourself in the name of fashion isn’t something anybody should advocate. Fortunately, there are a few ways to beat the trend at it’s own game, skip the crunches and eat and cupcake afterward. Here’s how:
1.HIGH WAISTS ARE YOUR FRIENDS
I’m putting my money on high waisted skirts, trousers and shorts this season. Not only are they bang on trend, they cover up a less than forgiving middle beautifully, while still leaving room for a little subtle skin show. They also hit your waist at it’s narrowest point and make your legs look longer. Win!
2. IT’S ALL ABOUT FINDING A BALANCE
If you’re wearing a fitted crop top, balance it out by wearing a flowy skirt or a pair of wide leg trousers. However, if your crop top is loose and billowy, bring out the pencil skirts and skinny jeans. Too much of the same thing could look trashy or frumpy, so think smart.
3. PLACE YOUR COLOURS WISELY
If you have a wider waist, pick a crop top colour in a darker colour and wear a lighter colour on the bottom. Vice versa if it’s your lower half you’re concerned about. Darker colours conceal body flaws, making you look slimmer.
4. SIZE REALLY DOES MATTER
Similarly, if you have a smaller torso you want to accentuate, pick a crop top with a large print which, thanks to visual trickery, creates the illusion of a wider frame. Or if you’re trying to play down a larger torso, have it look instantly smaller by picking a tiny print.
5. THE TUXEDO EFFECT
The hottest way to wear crop tops this season is also the most curve-friendly and a great alternative to the summer dress if you’re looking to shake up your style. Pick a crop top, shorts/pants and a jacket in the same colour or same print. This creates the illusion of length, but still leaves a little room for a peekaboo in the middle. I can’t wait to try this!
